Objectives of the project

The first objective for the Co-Lab project is to define requirements for an open and supportive environment for collaborative inquiry learning in which learners construct knowledge in realistic domains by experimenting, collaborating, and modelling.

To design and create an environment for collaborative inquiry learning in which learners act by constructing knowledge representations and domain models in a collaborative way on the basis of experimental and simulated data is the second objective of the project.

The third objective is to develop an architecture in which all components of the environment can exchange information and knowledge to support learning by providing adaptive feedback to learners.

To evaluate the assumptions on how to initiate and support collaborative inquiry is the fourth important objective. This will be done with two demonstrators of environments in applied science domains.

The fifth objective is to develop guidelines for integrating collaborative inquiry environments into the curricula of European schools and other educational institutions

The last  and sixth objective is to develop theoretical and practical insights that can guide the design of collaborative learning environments for self directed constructive learning. These six objectives lead to four concrete project outcomes. You can find them in the blue part of this page .

Project outcomes

1. Learning environment.
The Co-Lab learning environment consist of components for experimental spaces, collaborative and modelling whiteboards, and a broker service. The components are integrated in the Co-Lab learning architecture.

2. Demonstrators
Two demonstrators show the potential of the Co-Lab approach in practical applications
3. Requirement and evaluation studies
Results of these studies in real life school situations are contributing to the scientific body of knowledge on collaborative inquiry learning.
4. Implementation materials
Teaching material and a school implementation strategy bring the results of the project into practical application in schools.
