University of Murcia (UM) The University of Murcia
is an institution committed to public service in the area of higher education. The first university in Murcia is believed to have been founded in the year 1272, in the time of Alfonso X El Sabio. This university however, disappeared shortly after its inception, as did the two following attempts to establish a university in Murcia: La Universidad Literaria de Murcia (1840-1841) and the Universidad Libre de Murcia (1869-1874). The current University of Murcia was founded in 1915 and installed in the Colegio de La Merced, currently the Law Faculty. In the past fifteen years, the University has been a centre of continuing expansion. The number of faculties and schools has multiplied by five. In the same period of time, the number of students has increased from 5,000 to 30,000.
The University of Murcia is composed of two campuses: the Espinardo campus, located approximately three kilometres from the capital, and the Campus of La Merced, found in the centre of Murcia. Moreover, students of
the University, through the university infrastructure, are provided with access to a variety of cultural activities, sports, advising, information, associations, etc. |
